There are many resources out there to help you use your brain to greater effect. Here are the ones about which we know, and which extend the functionality of BrainBox. However, we are happy to add more 'mind tools', if you can recommend software that does not appear in the list that follows. And if the software is reputable and the web link does not contain annoying adverts or popups. Enjoy...

NOTE: If you come to this page and find that a link does not work, because the web site to whom the link is pointing has moved, please inform us. We can then update this page and save everyone a lot of time and effort. Similarly, let us know if the content of a site become offensive or inappropriate. Thank you for you help in this matter. Extending the power of Windows

Text-To-Speech

Microsoft have produced two major text-to-speech engines. The main one, SAPI5, is built into Windows XP. However, there is another, called SAPI4, which is used to drive Microsoft Agents, who can pop up and read text to you. There are a large number of free software tools and code snippets for using speech in the guise of both SAPI4 and SAPI5 with a variety of Microsoft products. These can be downloaded from the Microsoft Agent web site. And if you want more naturalistic voices to use with your agents, then listen to the AT&T Natural Voices that are available from nextup.com.

Speech-To-Text

Built into modern versions of Windows is a little known facility to turn spoken words into text, or at the very least to control applications using your voice. You will find this facility in the accessibility section of the Windows Start bar. Interestingly, you can download the MS Speech To Text SDK (software development kit), if you want to add speech recognition to a variety of applications. The home for speech recognition at Microsoft is the MS Speech Server web site which contains a lot of articles and links by which you can find out more. However, be warned, it will probably look confusing if you are not used to programming. If you feel daunted then use google to look for advice and sample code on the web. One way to get a feel for what is possible is to read about using voice input with MS Agents, because the Microsoft Agent web site contains some straightforward examples. In addition, you might like to download the free demos of Say-Now, GameCommander, Talk2Desktop and Research Labs Wave-To-Text application and programming component.

If the preceding resource are not enough, here's an even longer list of free and low-cost software about which we have been told, which can be used to assist you in your work with BrainBox...
