About our web folders...

When you open our web folders, you leave the main circle-of-excellence web site and you access a set of web folders, which are located on the "LearningSpace" server, run by the College of St Mark & St John. The LearningSpace server being the main server for staff and students at the college in which Pete teaches.

So...

...if you are new to the concept of web folders, you might like to read the following notes, which explain what is happening, and also explain why we use college web folder facilities.

The advantages of using the web folder service provided by the LearningSpace server are (first) that the service is very fast, and also (second) that the LearningSpace web folders let you view our work in a format reminiscent of Windows Explorer.

This means that you can highlight, then drag and drop files and folders onto your PC hard drive, as easily as if you were dragging and dropping resource files from a CD or data peg, plugged into your computer's USB slot. Indeed, if you are on a UK JANET college broadband link, your download speed may feel comparable with a USB1 slot...or faster.

However...

In the wonderful world of technology, you never gain an advantage without also acquiring one or two disadvantages along the way. In this case, the disadvantages are that, occasionally, the web folder server gets overzealous and tries to ask you to log-in, when there is no need. And once or twice, every few months, the server has to be taken offline at weekends for maintenance and updating, because we are still learning how to use it to its best advantage.

And lastly, to enable you to access our web folders we uploaded some links, similar to those you might make using a Windows' Network Neighborhood Wizard. Thus, we are unsure how well the links might work on non-Windows' pcs. This means that if you are using Mac OS or Linux, you may need to download files one at a time, using the links provided.
